Robert Beattie’s doubts about Jim Taylor

Background

Robert Beattie (R.J.O.B.) wrote a deceitful circular in 1971, attacking the assemblies in Port Elizabeth and Jansenville, South Africa as well as persons in them including Deryck Noakes.

The following account shows how he doubted belovèd Jim Taylor and himself was not in a position to judge or pronounce on matters covered in his circular.

The doubts

  1. Two witnesses confirm that on 2 August 1970 at the Johannesburg care meeting – which was immediately after the events at Aberdeen – a brother in Johannesburg suggested belovèd Jim Taylor for a levitical gift, whereupon R.J.O.B. ruled that ‘we will not be ministering to any levites.’

After the care meeting, R.J.O.B. contacted other localities in South Africa and found out that they had all ministered to Jim Taylor. In a phone call to Deryck Noakes, he expressed his annoyance that he had not been informed beforehand what others were planning to do! (It had never been a practice for localities to share information before the care meeting, about who the levitical giving would be for.)

A couple from Port Elizabeth travelled to New York to deliver the gifts to Jim Taylor, from each locality in South Africa. When he received the bounty, he ran his eye down the list of names and noticed that Johannesburg was missing. R.J.O.B. came up with a deceitful plan in an attempt to cover his error, and arranged for an informal collection to be taken up on the following Wednesday, which he then delivered personally to Jim Taylor in New York – inviting himself to stay with the Taylors.

During this visit, at a meal in Jim Taylor’s house, his wife brought R.J.O.B.’s plate for a second helping of the roast – Mr Taylor cut off a piece of fat and said ‘you give that to him.’ Not unlike what the Lord did to Judas.

At a care meeting in Britain at the same time, when a brother opposed a levitical gift for Jim Taylor, he was immediately withdrawn from.

(Note: On 6 January 2013 it was acknowledged and judged in the assembly in Johannesburg, that it was wrong that action had not been taken against R.J.O.B. for opposing the levitical giving to Jim Taylor.)

  2. He stated after his return from New York in August 1970 that Jim Taylor had fallen into the error of Martin Luther by turning to the Press and the BBC for support.

  3. Only months before penning the circular, he stated in the assembly in Johannesburg, that he had continuous doubts as to Jim Taylor and only got relief in the assembly.

  4. When a brother in Johannesburg said ‘there was glory in the house at Aberdeen’ he responded by exclaiming ‘Tripe!’

  5. After Aberdeen, R.J.O.B. had the audacity to phone Jim Taylor and enquire if it would be permitted for him to take a sister to a bedroom and ask her to strip for him. Jim Taylor’s answer to R.J.O.B. was: Just remember Bob, you can’t do what I can do. R.J.O.B. then went ahead and did it repeatedly, and deceived his local brethren about the nature of the relationship. (See court records as witness.)
