Court Record of the 'Six Halls' case
Background
The following is an extract from the Court Record when Advocate Dr W.E. Cooper, (for defendants 1, 2, 3 & 7) was cross-examining Peter Collins (C.P.C.) under oath, about matters relating to Robert Beattie. Peter Collins was one of R.J.O.B’s local brethren in Johannesburg, South Africa.
These records witness to the facts that R.J.O.B.:
- was a liar, as seen in his deceitful circular of 1971;
- was involved in a sinful relationship while dealing with assembly matters;
- and travelled around England immediately after Deryck Noakes’ service there, being there when Harrow repudiated Deryck’s meetings.
Transcript of court record
(Note:
- The person referred to as ‘Mr Beatty’ in the court record is Mr Robert J.O. Beattie.
- Bold emphasis added for clarity.)

CASE NO. I 2408/74
(Known as the ‘Six Halls’ Case)
Vol iii Page 239 to 240
14 May 1980
Dr Cooper. Now you’ve used the expression “shut up”. Would you explain to his lordship what being shut up means, or confined means?
C.P.C. Well it’s principle by which the assembly is protected where persons are contaminated by evil while matters are being worked out by priestly persons . . .
Dr Cooper. . . . In fact while we’re about it, it comes from the days when lepers were shut up in houses, not so?
C.P.C. Yes . . .
Dr Cooper. I think you mentioned one that you spoke to – Mr Robert Beatty?
C.P.C. Yes
Dr Cooper. Have you always been in fellowship with him?
C.P.C. Yes
Dr Cooper. He ever been shut up?
C.P.C. He was withdrawn from, he was shut up and then withdrawn from.
Dr Cooper. When was that?
C.P.C. In 1974 . . .
Dr Cooper. . . . It must have been something serious he had done for you to have shut him up and then withdrawn from him?
C.P.C. Yes
Dr Cooper. What had he done?
C.P.C. We withdrew from him for lying . . .
Dr Cooper. Why did you shut him up?
C.P.C. Because matters were unclear . . .
Dr Cooper. . . . What was he withdrawn from for?
C.P.C. He was withdrawn from for lying . . .
Dr Cooper. But was he involved with another sister?
C.P.C. Yes
Dr Cooper. What was the charge?
C.P.C. The charge against him was that he had lied and lied and lied about matters that were put to him by the priest and the priest had witness to what his conduct was and we were told in the assembly that in regard of these matters that he had lied and lied and lied and we withdrew from him.
Dr Cooper. And this was the man that you spoke to and sought guidance from in 1970?
C.P.C. That’s right.

Dr Cooper. This Mr Beatty took a leading role, part and played a leading role in the decision to withdraw from Mr Reynolds?
C.P.C. Yes
Dr Cooper. Would it be correct to say that at the time Mr Beatty was the most prominent brother in Johannesburg?
C.P.C. Yes
Dr Cooper. Would it be correct to say that in South Africa he was one of the most prominent brethren?
C.P.C. Yes, sad to say.
Dr Cooper. And at the time that in fact he was purporting to sit in judgment on Mr. Reynolds, he himself did not have clean hands?
C.P.C. Yes
Dr Cooper. And at the time that in fact he was purporting to sit in judgment of Mr. Noakes, he did not have clean hands?
C.P.C. Yes
Dr Cooper. In fact, he was deceiving all the brethren and sisters in the assembly in Johannesburg.
C.P.C. That’s true.
Dr Cooper. And so was the sister.
C.P.C. Yes

Dr Cooper. Now you have told us in your evidence that Mr Beatty returned to Johannesburg in December sometime.
C.P.C. Yes it was a Thursday . . . I think it might have been the 31st December.
Dr Cooper. And Mr Beatty had been overseas?
C.P.C. Yes
Dr Cooper. He’d been to — where had he gone to?
C.P.C. England. I can’t recall where he went in England.
Dr Cooper. Now he’d only been over for two weeks, had he?
C.P.C. Ja, it wasn’t a long period of time . . .
Dr Cooper. Had he gone over on spiritual matters or had he gone over on business matters or did he do a bit of each?
C.P.C. I don’t know all what he did there, but he went to see the Brethren and I think he took some meetings.
Dr Cooper. Did he go to see the Brethren in England about Mr Noakes?
C.P.C. I don’t know.
Dr Cooper. . . . And it was while Mr Beatty was overseas that the Harrow took it’s judgment?
C.P.C. That’s right.
Dr Cooper. . . . Did he report that he had been in contact with Harrow?
C.P.C. Yes, I think he reported that he had spoken to Brethren local in Harrow.
Dr Cooper. Did Mr. – to put it simply – Beatty not go overseas on a witch hunt relating to Mr Noakes?
C.P.C. I can’t say and I don’t know and therefore I just can’t answer that.
